Ernie Ball is the nom de guerre of a UCD lecturer in a humanities subject. This is his blog in which he will comment on current issues, mostly concerning the institution of the university and its mutations under the economic and ideological pressures of the day.

  1. I’m not happy with this. I’ve just discovered that E.B. is not your real name.

  2. Online anonymity is an accepted right, and I can fully understand his reasons.
As an academic in UCD, (s)he may feel what he writes might come against him down the line. I’d like to think it wouldn’t, but that doesn’t make it so, and I wouldn’t bet my paycheck on it.
Real or imagined, the risk might stay his pen, which would be a tragedy. It would take great courage bordering on folly to be so critical of his own senior management in a public forum. While such courage would merit applause, I’m reading for his wits, not his balls.
For the record, my blog started the day my contract with UCC ended.
